Wolves V Hull City – Preview
By JOEL REED
Wolverhampton Wanderers boss Glenn Hoddle today sent out a warning to his players ahead of Saturday’s testing league match against Championship new boys Hull City, proclaiming: "we will have to show respect."
Former England international coach Hoddle watched on as his side beat promotion favourites Crystal Palace 2-1 at Molineux last Tuesday to extend their unbeaten league streak to 20 matches, a feat which was last achieved by Wolves back in 1923.
Hoddle will be hoping after earning a draw against Southampton on the opening day of the season and taking all three points three days ago against Palace that he can put the sword to Hull, who Wolves haven’t played in 14 years, next.
"I played with Peter [Taylor – Hull City boss] at Tottenham and brought him in as under-21 manager when I was with England.
"He has done a tremendous job with Hull and I think they will surprise people. They have had two solid draws will be confident they can adapt to the pace of a higher division.
"Peter is a thorough guy and will bring a well prepared side that we will have to show respect.
"Nick [Barmby – Hull City striker] is still a class player that can cause you problems. He has a smashing attitude towards the game and I remember that he worked as hard in training as he did during a game. He's astute and can pick your pocket so we will need to shackle him."
Wolves could be without their skipper Paul Ince, who suffered a slight calf strain in training last week and he will be replaced once again by Seyi George Olofinjana in central midfield.
Central defender Jody Craddock, who hobbled off the pitch after 63 minutes last Tuesday with a recurrence of the calf strain he picked up in pre-season, will be replaced by Rob Edwards, who will partner Joleon Lescott in the heart of the defence.
Defender Gabor Gyepes, who signed a six-month loan deal from Ferencvaros just a fortnight ago, has been ruled out for at least four weeks, after he suffered ankle ligament damage during a recent Wolves first-team training session.
And striker George Ndah, who returned for Wolves for the first time in two years after suffering from a long-term hamstring injury to play 15 minutes last Tuesday, is likely to start on the substitute’s bench.
Hull City, who are without defenders; Alton Thelwell, Robbie Stockdale and Mark Lynch for up to a month, could be without another – Leon Cort – who could miss facing his brother Carl tomorrow after injuring his foot in the recent 1-1 draw against Sheffield Wednesday.
Cort is rated 50-50 to play at Molineux and Danny Coles is standing by to switch to a central defensive role from right back.
